1.1 Investigate

Experiment four[4]

See deeply/critical
In this experiment, I’m scanning some spreads of the book having in mind the content of them. Seeing deeper into the book, each carpet along with its description(where it exists), hides behind it a meaning. The shapes of the patterns as well as the colours, can cause various feelings to the viewer.

The moves I have made during the scanning process of each spread/page are based on the shapes from the patterns of each carpet.

Example one
Aggressive and rough moves

Example two
Smooth moves

Example three
circular and smooth moves

Example four
circular moves

Example five
square and static moves

Example six
circular moves

Example seven
both static and circular moves

Thermography | See deeply through the colours
Using the outcomes from the previous experiment with the scanner, I wanted to see deeply through the colours, using a different method of investigation; Thermography. This method let me see how warm or cold are the colours in each composition, giving me the general mood of each one.

Conclusion
My conclusion after all the above experiments with the scanner is that the possibilities are endless. Every time the outcome is different, and can’t be the same again. Also, the exhaustive investigation using the scanner, helped me understand that there are so many ways to see something from a different perspective.

Also, the method which I chose to build up into a full investigation (scanner), helped me discover and deconstruct the images according to their content, shapes and colours. The abstract results give new dimensions to the book, giving it a feeling of movement and rhythm. Additionally, the outcomes of experimenting with text and images individually are both interesting but the combination of them produces a stronger and more effective design.

Generally, the publication that I have chosen to investigate is a series of photographs of carpets from various hotels and airports all over the world, and that’s it. Through my investigation, I had the chance to see under the surface, seeing more deeply and critically. What helped me to achieve this, is the recording of the shapes and the colour palettes of the carpet designs as well as the rules I have set in combination with the questions I have made to myself. Some of the questions were why is this carpet design consists of these shapes and what its colours show?

Research about the social history of my site (context): Each carpet, has its own special pattern, thus its own special story. Both colour palettes and design elements such as lines and shapes, give a unique identity to the carpet which in turn will provoke the corresponding emotions to the viewer. It can be clearly seen that each carpet has a colour that stands out more than the others. However, the combinations of the colours on each carpet design can easily cause feelings and emotions. In addition, colours and design elements are highly associated with the historical and social context of a country, as most of the time, the carpet designs are connected with the countries where are displayed.

The final outcomes(not polished) and the aim of this investigation, is the reproduction of new patterns through the deconstruction of the existing carpet designs.
